Hypophilia

Updated: JULY 3, 2017

Hypophilia is a condition where individuals are lacking in sexual responsiveness or interest. This syndrome is often caused by a problem with the person’s genitalia, although psychological problems can also cause this sexual condition.

Because of their condition, people with hypophilia, known as hypophiles, have sex very infrequently, if at all.

More About Hypophilia

Hypophiles may feel repulsed about sex or simply apathetic about it. They may also have physical reactions when sex is attempted, such as vaginismus, when spasms occur in the vagina making penetration difficult and painful, or impotence. Women with hypophilia may not become lubricated naturally during foreplay. Both genders may also fail to orgasm from sexual interactions, although this symptom is more common in women.

It’s important to note that while hypophilia impacts a person’s perceptions of sex and ability to lust after someone, it does not impair their ability to love. Hypophiles often fall in love and wish to pursue romantic relationships just as people with “normal” sexual functioning. However, the condition can take a toll on any relationships hypophiles pursue.

Sometimes hypophilia is caused by problems in a person’s sexual development, such as sexual abuse or incest. This is more common in females who have had such problems, rather than males.
